hi guys,great site,i am new here.i own a 55 lacetti,with 29000 on the clock,the problem i have is for awhile if i have not used the car for a few days,its starts up ok,drive a few miles,then the car seems to lose power and spluttering,then all power goes.no brakes or steering ,the car just drifts no power at all, i have been lucky so far,no accidentsi turn key,starts up straight away,i take it for a long run, all ok for a short period of maybe a week, any idea please,cheers colin

I think I would start by replacing the petrol filter, the chances are that it has never been changed. They are not too expensive, I have not looked to see where they are located but are frequently mounted in the fuel line not far from the petrol tank. It would be nice if they mounted them on the bulkhead in the engine bay, some are but most are fitted as I say fairly close to the petrol tank.

Hi, I'm a newby, can't be of much help (at the moment) except to say our estate has exactly the same problem! (some times acompanied by the engine warning light and sometimes not) going to try the' fuel filter ' route and see what happens.

well, renewed fuel filter, and found a leaking vacume hose and cured that. But it still has the problem. (go to pull away, kangaroos a bit then dies. switch off then start engine again and it runs, idles fine then go to pull away and it dies again.) would a sticking choke cause this? anyone any ideas? :-)

You can rule out any choke probems as this only applies on engines with a carburetor and your engine is fuel injected. As your engine management is coming on I think you will need to get the engine connected up to a computor to asses the actual problem

Hello John, thanks for your imput, thankful for all imformation. i'm a bit oldschool with engines, (fuel injection and management systems are a new item to me) but slowly i am begining to understand more... but not enough! consulted expert on line, who said he thought it was the EGR sticking or faulty causing a rich mix and stalling her. l made a blanking plate but to no avail, l think because its an electronic EGR and therefor part of the management system. last time this problem occured our local garage had to take it to chevy dealership costing £1000, its only 4 years old and we're not anxious to go though that again, one year on!Not sure whether to buy new EGR valve online an try it or .......carry on scratchinhg my head!!!!! regards Kev

Hi Kev,
I know where you are coming from as being more of a hotrodder I am limited in my knowledge of modern technology. My 'other' vehicle is a Jago Jeep ( WW2 Willys MB replica ) with very basic Ford Escort mk2 running gear. A few years ago I used to own a Deawoo Espero for about 75,000 miles which at that time was very modern for me. I suppose the Lacetti is a decendant of the Espero. I bought my 2008 1.8 auto Lacetti station wagon because of the low miles ( 6000 miles ) and the low price compared to other makes as I did when I had the Espero. It is worth doing a google search on the EGR valve for more info. Keep us updated.
