My Captiva has only done over 6,000 miles since new in May but today showed a yellow warning light for the Diesel Particulate Filter! Spoke to the garage who have just taken on the dealership and they said it was usually cars of 60,000 miles whereby the warning light would come on!

Also after switching off the engine it races and smells a bit for several minutes and that is on a cold day. Maybe nothing to do with it and the fuel consumption is still bad too!

Anyone else had this problem? Garage seems to thing it never had any additives put into the filter etc. Going in on Wednesday but haven't got the right computer set up only for the models up to 2010!

Thanks!

The DPF warning light on my 61 plate LTZ came on after I had
done about 8000 miles and had to drive for half an hour on the motorway before
it went out.

I think the racing you are referring to is the cooling fan
running which mine does regularly I when I do lots of short journeys collecting
grandchildren from school.

Lots of other posts on forum about DPF and the need for
regeneration is dependent on the type of driving you do and not necessarily the
mileage.

Alyson, There is almost a 'book' on former posts in the forum about this. It sounds as if your vehicle has been unable to complete earlier routine particulate cleaning and has reached the point where your warning light has notified you that it MUST be completed. A jolly good 'hot run' for half an hour on a motor way/dual carriage in manual gear mode 4th or 5th gear (not auto) so as to maintain revs well over 2,000 should burn it clean. The smell of burning is normal. When the clean burn is finished the dash light should go off. Do not stop driving part way through!! The 'racing' engine is usually a sign that you have stopped driving before the self clean was completed.

Dont let the dealer fleece you. Take it for a long high rev run tomorrow (tuesday) and you'll probably not need to take it to the dealer on wednesday. An oil change will probably be a good idea because the excess DPF particles will have contaminated the oil.

Do check your oil level (when vehicle has been standing for an hour or so on level ground). If it is high then you may have had excessive diesel washed through into the sump from previous incomplete attempts to self clean. If the oil is excessively high you have diluted the engine oil which will lead to unnecessary engine wear. I would suggest you have the oil changed at 6,000 anyway to be on the safe side. £30/40 worth of oil is better than £3,000 for new engine.

Alyson, Further update to my earlier reply. I have found the previous postings for DPF (look back to mid October under DPF problems) and you will see pages and pages of comment. Some members have gone so far as to have the DPF removed completely but I wouldnt go that route while still under warranty.
Many of our Forum members north of England and over the the border where temperatures are generally colder seem to suffer most, and all of us perhaps not travelling so far in winter thus there is less opportunity for a sustained 'hot run'. Another reason could be that because the DPF is situated a fair way back along the exhaust, the cold weather running under the car cools the exhaust gasses before reaching the DPF. The DPF needs to be hot to work effectively.
Final comment: You indicated that your dealer hasnt got suitable diagnostic equipment to service your vehicle
. Simple answer - find another dealer who has
. The complexity of the modern car simply doesnt allow for 'trail and error'. If your dealer operates by trial and error at £60 plus an hour then you'll have either a big bill or no satisfactory solution, or probably both!

I have written chapter and verse on the subject and I am one of the people that has had to have the filter removed because of the problems and the damage it can do to the engine. [1] find another garage the captiva system does not haveadditives so they are as much in the dark as you are, [2] take it for a run on the motorway for twenty minutes third or forth gear depending on your speed but keep engine revs above 3,000rpm keep those revs up continuously. that should sort the car out for now. Then start looking through old relevantposts, also google, problems with DPF's [dieselparticulate filters], and oilcontamination because of DPF, also see if you can find the WATCHDOG program they did. Justsee what your up against doing short runs. Alsothe light could have come on at 3,000 miles let alone 6.
The smell is the exhaust getting red hot with the car trying to activeregenerate the dpf by pumping diesel down the exhaust, this is the same diesel that goes into the oil if you turn the car off during the process. The fans also run even on a cold day to keep the engine bay cool because of the excessive heat.

Many thanks for all your good and help! My Captiva normally does a mixture oflong and short journeys and as you say driving in the cold conditions do not help either although the gauge seems to go half way after a few minutes of running. As under warranty the dealership going to check it over but will be taking it for a long, fast run etc. In Scotland there are very few dealerships only one in Edinburgh where I am as they have now taken over from the other dealer, one in Glasgow and I think one in Ayr! That is why up here I have a rare car! Never see another one except the older model!

I have driven many different types of cars, a lot for short journeys but never seen this warning light before. My previous car a 4x4 VW Tiguan was mainly used for short journey which I had for nearly 2 years until the thing started leaking every time it rained so swapped it over for the bigger Chevi. Had the same problem with the fan and engine smelling but nothing more. Are Captiva's more prone to this because of the bigger engine being the 184 bhp?

Will let you know what happens!

Many Thanks!

Best Regards,
Alyson

Its nothing to do with engine temperature its the temperature of the filter in the exhaust systemhalf way down under the car. Anyway this subject has been done to death in past posts.

Hi AlysonAssume the garage you are mentioning is Belmont at Sighthill
I have a 2012 LTZ and just had it serviced by them with no problems.
They also advised about a Sat Nav update which I knew nothing about
I have seen a number around so do not worry they are not rare.

Ours was using a lot of fuel and the garage said its because I had the heater set to the windscreen which turns on the air conditioning apparently ? Don't know how true this is but we turned it off and the fuel economy seems better !

The demist brings on the a/c as it dries the moisture out of the air and removes what cauyses the fogging ogf the glass, so yes, they're right, and running the air con uses more fuel. One of my issues with the captiva was that with the climate control, you could never sellect the a/c to be truely off as it always activated when the demist was on. New car has manual aircon, so no such issue.

Thought I would just add my ten pence worth.
The OP suggests the engine races after switching off the ignition, i take it you are referring to the cooling fan which runs at excessive revs for 30/40 seconds after the engine has switched off. This has been discussed in previous threads, but the concensus of opinion is that a regeneration has been interrupted and the fans run excessively fast to cool the engine down, but no one really knows for sure this is the reason.

Interested in the comments that your garage made that the dpf warning lightusuallyilluminates incars that have done in excess of 60,000 miles. As a previous poster quite rightly states the regularity of illumination of the dpf warning light is dependent on the type of driving that you do, plenty of long trips will lead to passive regeneration keeping the dpf relatively unclogged and the dpf light may never come on. In my case I have done 9000 miles or so from new and the light has come on twice, i believe Aussie Ed has had his come on twice, and his car is a year old aswell. In my opinion the 60,000 miles comment is an irrelevance and it is purely down to the type of journeys that you do. Unless they are suggesting that the average life of a dpf is 60,000 miles, which isn't great news as they are an expensive replacement.

I understand that the dpf is 70% clogged when the warning light comes on, and if you fail to carry out the 20 to 30 minute drive at moderate to fast speeds to allow regeneration to occur you are liable to knacker the thing.

Totally understand anyone who has it removed, have left mine in due to the car still being under warranty, but it is a massive pain, and causes decreased fuel efficiency and power, and is a thoroughly primitive means of achieving reduced air pollution from exhausts.

Passive regeneration is when the car tries to do regeneration naturally, then active regeneration iswhen the injectors puts diesel in on the exhaust stroke passing down the exhaust to heat the DPF. If the regenerationskeep failing then the light comes on basically asking for a hand by asking you not to turn off the engine and give it a vigorous run while it tries another active regeneration. If the light is ignored it will go into limp mode and possibly require a forced regeneration by the dealership, forced regeneration causes that much heat it reduces the life of the filter and may only be done a couple of times. Regarding the fans running, they run all the time during an active regeneration but most people only become aware of them when the engine is turned off and they over run, the main reason they run is not so much to keep the engine temp down but to cool down the turbo and theengine bay because of the excessive heat from the exhaust. To keep KL happy if you regularly do good runs you should have no bother at all, and an odd regeneration is not that bad, but if you fall into the category where you are doing short slow runs for periods of time exasperated by cold weatherthe primitive system can really damage or shorten the life of the engine.

I had the same thing the other day, Diesel Filter light, read in the manual you have to go for a long run, I was out for over half an hour and the light did go off. You have to let it clean itself, do not stop while its on!

You say the light didn't go off after over half an hour, i'm assuming it did eventually?

As i've said mine has illuminated twice since i bought the car a year or so ago, both times I took it on a fast A road and kept the speed above 50mph pretty much the whole way. Each timethe lighttook 20-25 minutes to go out.

wife just called me, her DPF light was flashing, she read in the book that the car needs to be driven, so she carried on, and now the light has gone off.... coolio...
However, her journeys are never short...
Car is 2 years old (but mk1 model), the 2.0tdci.... Bought only 2 months ago with 11k miles, she is upto 17k already as she drives lots on motorways, average speed of 70mph in 5th gear, as well as going off beat onto small A and B roads....
So am guessing in her case, the flashing light was just the cars way of saying its doing a clean ? (think she has been driving at 60mph on motorways to keep rev's low and fuel low, which i guess creates the DPF problem ?!)

Well, i spoke to soon...she carried on down the motorway driving at around 80mph (cough, 70mph officer!).... (25 mins after the flashing DPF light)
but then said she felt like the wind just starting pushing the car and slowing down, dropped to 4th but said there was no power, back into 5th, still no power, so as was 1 mile from services, went there....

she says car felt like it was in limp-home mode giving no power, so now called the RAC guy....

To recap... she's on motorway, see's the flashing light, so she pulls over and turns the engine off!

Quickly read the book, realised engines needs to be on so turns on, and then carries on with her journey at 80mph until the limp-home mode appers (25 to 30 mins later).....

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !! A trip to Chevvy is in order i think ?

Told the wife to goto our chevvy place (cardiff) after the RAC checks the car which should be in about 30 mins (takes RAC 1hr 35 mins to get to the m5 south services, keeping in mind the RAC control centre at M5/M4 is only 30 miles away from where she is!, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm great eh !!)
Will report back with what chevvy say to her, but yeah, i told her to give em **** so they dont try and say its nothing, etc (as most dealers do!)

I would have thought your wife's driving history is good enough to keep the filter clear through passive regeneration, but it is possible when cruising in fifth the revs are still not high enough to create enough heat in the DPF to burn off the soot particles especially at the weather temperatures we have been getting lately passing over the filter at 60mph keeping it cool. The filter even with the extra speed has still not cleared its self and blocked further and gone into limp mode to protect the engine. try if possible a run not at high speed but more at high revs around 3,000 or so not too high to make the engine scream. failing that get it checked out to make sure all the sensors are working correctly and that the active regeneration is also working.

Also take what some dealers say with a pinch of salt if there lips move they are probably lying if there is money involved !!! Edited by: bel
