Hi guys,

I found the website whilst looking for information regarding a possible fault.

My father-in-law bought a Chevy Captiva from Peter Vardy in Aberdeen December last year. All was well when he got the car but after about 3-4 months of owning it he noticed a vibration when the car was put in 4th gear. Now it started as a small vibration but started getting worse so he returned to Peter Vardy for them to fix it. When he got it back it seemed to be fixed but after about a week it returned. Again he returned the car to them for it to be investigated. They have now had the car for almost 4 months!! and are saying its "something that the car does" and that he will have to live with it. At the moment it is with a gearbox specialist in Glasgow (the name escapes me at the moment) who have been asked to investigate it by Peter Vardy but can't seem to see the fault.

Now the question I have is has anyone else here had the same issue and if so what was it and was it ever fixed?

My father-in-law really likes the car but since he's not had it for 4 months is starting to get very irrate regarding his treatment from Peter Vardy. He has been in touch with Chevy directly but they won't commit themselves until Peter Vardy have diagnosed a fault.

I have noticed something similar when in 4th gear but only if I rest my hand on the gear lever. If I lift my hand off, it doesn't do it. I'll do something about it if it "vibrates" when I don't have my hand on the gear lever, otherwise I'm going to leave it. I've just assumed it's a characteristic of the gear box.

This vibration is apparent when the your hand isn't on the gear stick too. You can visibly see the stick vibrate

The biggest problem we have at the moment is Peter Vardy is trying to say all Captiva's do it but I can't find anyone else complaining or mentioning it. I've asked him to go to Peter Vardy and ask them to show him another one that does it too.

Just hoping he gets it sorted soon, 4 months for a car to be in garage is excessive if you ask me.

Yeah he's been in touch with them, but Chevy is waiting for the outcome from Peter Vardy.

We just get the feeling that Peter Vardy are dragging their heels and will say its meant to be like that :?

My main aim in posting is find out if it IS a characteristic of the car or if there is actually a fault and Peter Vardy are being obstructive.

If you have a warranty for the car I would suggest you get a second opinion from an alternative garage of your choice - hopefully this may identify the problem / cause of the vibration which may allow you to claim for replacement parts through the warranty provider.

Yeah the car is under warranty as it was only bought in December brand new. The biggest issue he is having is that fact that Peter Vardy have had it so long and are now saying its meant to be like that.

Every car that we have own hasn't done that so I can't see how they can say its normal

Hi, I have the same vibration on my captiva in 4-th gear. I notice it 2 days after I purchase. It was very noisy when the hand was on the gearbox. But after running on highway the vibration was lower and lower but still existing. At 4500 I went to the dealer with complain. They noticed the vibration and advise me that plastick materials in the gear box are doing the noise and vibration. They advise that will need 6 hours to spend with the car so they can fix the plastick parts in the gear box. The next day the car was return to me. The vibration is minimal but I can still fell it. They have calibrate the plastick parts, and also oily all metal cales from hand brake. the viubration is very minimal, the gear box exchange the gears smootly and much more better then at purchase. but I am not satisfied yet.On the first service at 7500km 20 days ago I claim again about the vibration, but the don't do anything.
SO I will leave for now, but since the car has 2 year warranty I am going to insist to change something in the gear box until vibration is totaly off.

Thanks, I've let him know he's not the only one with the issue. Not sure I like the sound of plastic parts in a gearbox I must say.

I'll let you know if he gets his resolved and what they did to fix it and hopefully it helps you too.

Anyone else have an issue with the gearbox?

It sounds to me that there might be a misdsing palstic damper somewhere in the linkage. Is there any issue with the gearbox, strange noises etc, or is it purely the lever?

Can't re-iterate this enough - GET THE CAR TO AN ALTERNATIVE CHEVROLET DEALER. From your opening and subsequent posts it appears he (your father-in-law) is receiving sub-standard customer service. 4 months to have possesion of a vehicle is unacceptable. Make friends with another dealer and move the vehicle to their premises at your earliest opportunity and make it very clear to P.Vardy's that your are taking the car as they have not met with your requirements.

Problem being there isn't another Chevy dealer near Aberdeen that we can take it to. Also they currently have the car at a gearbox specialist in Glasgow so we still need to wait for its return

Ok, in that case do the following:
From now on; Document every conversation with Vardy's and pester them for updates. Give them time to respond and if the responses are not to your satisfaction ask them to return the car to you. If there is'nt a chevrolet dealer in your area contact chevrolet HQ and ask for assistance and dont be fobbed off!

Personally i'd be looking to get the car back now, seek out a g/box specialist and seek their advice giving them the opportunity to inspect the car, then armed with the diagnostics return to your chevrolet dealer and speak directly to the branch manager not his lacky. i fear at the minute you are being short changed.

I have a 60 plate captiva ltz, been in and out of Peter vardy (Edinburgh) several times. Gearbox rattle in 4the gear between 1500 to 2k revs loudest around 1800rpm. There final response, "it's just a characteristic of the car". It's in for first service tomorrow so will mention it again along with the reason I'm up at 5am, alarm going off and a few other things.
If it does get resolved please post on here at I will be paying them another visit

It's not a characteristic cause if it was I'd have it and I don't. And Vardy's are crap, whether it's Edinburgh or anywhere else.
