I have recently found that both rear driveshafts have this amount of play in them. Ordered new bearings and will try to change them without taking down the rear differential

Took some time to go through local chevrolet groups to find the bearing model. It is the norm just to replace with second hand parts around here

Started by removing the driveshafts, then loosened the differential carrier from the chassis, removed the cover and got the differential out. Carrier remains in the car, as it is too heavy to handle

The bearings are shot. Removed the races from the differential by trying 2 ways. Grinding and breaking with cold chisel or by using a puller. Puller was easiest

Putting back the new races was just hammer work

For the bearing embedded in the carrier, I had to carefully grind it out

As for the cover, I had a shop solder a piece of metal to the bearing and hammer it out. Putting back was, again, hammer work (removed the seal to avoid damaging it)

As of today, I will press in the bearing cup in the differential carrier and overhaul the drive shafts with new grease. Will keep you updated once all is back together

I just noticed that I posted the picture of the differential carrier two times. Sorry about that.

About the differential carrier, once it is loosened from the chassis, as the drive shaft is still attached, it will put pressure on the central drive shaft bearing. I used a ratcheting rope and secured it to relieve any pressure on this bearing, as it is enclosed in a rubber mount, difficult to replace
