HiThinking about buying a new LT Captiva but reading this forum it would appear that you guys are less than pleased with the fuel consumption.
Combined cycle is advertised at 42.9mpg and every car I have owned has generally returned a consumption figure close to advertised combined cycle.
I know that most in car computers don't give very accurate average consumption figure so hopefully someone out there is keeping track of their fuel consumption costs etc.
I cover about 35,000 miles per year and keep meticulous (sad, I know) records of fuel bought incase mr taxman wants to see, so I know my figures are accurate.
I have a larger 4x4 at present which gives me 29-30mpg average but if Captiva isn't much better I'd be as well to run present car for another year.
Any thoughts or experiences would be helpful.

hi,
well i love my captiva, but the fuel use is an issue,
i get around 32mpg on an average run...
but it has been reliable, and its got a brilliant 7 seat facility.
but if fuel is a major issue, then possibly look elsewhere.

I also keep tight record of fuel bought (incase tax man asks :().



Last week managed to get 47 mpg.... YIPEEE!!!!



Until I found out my wife "topped it up" without getting a reciept or reseting the trip..... Doh... back down to 31 mpg.



Agree, fantastic car, brill 7 seats, as back row are useable for GROWN UPS... but mpg is disapointing. I gather an AUTO is even worse. So keep away from the automatics.

Echo what the others say, its a big heavy car and needs a bigger engine IMO.

Personally I'd always take the claimed mpg figures with a pinch of salt.

Dunno about the newmodel, but mine will not do anything more than mid 20's. To be fair though, I wasn't expecting much more and it's benefits outweigh the higher fuel costs.
I would imagine the newermodels are better.

I think if economy is that much of an issue, you need to look at something smaller without 4WD. You don't get anything for nothing and the advantages of the Captiva IMHO outweigh the disadvantages. They are relatively cheap to buy and you can buy loads of diesel for the money you'll save over a comparable 7 seat SUV. Performance wise, I've never had any issues. I think the 2ltr diesel is fine, because it's not a sports car and has bags of torque. The only issue I have with the fuel consumption is that it's so far away from what was claimed in the literature. Naughty Chevy!

I have the new 2.2 Lt and averages 32mpg. This is the only real disappointment with the car.
I am even considering a remap or tuning box as they all claim ! 10 to 15 % increase in fuel economy.
However as this is the new engine there don't seem to be many companies out there yet offering to do the 2.2.

Has anyone else tried remapping or these tuning boxes before ?

I have 2litre LT 7 seat. I average 33-34 mpg. I made a 1600 mile round trip in the summer with 4 in the car and loads of luggage and averaged about 37 mpg. And that's working out from mileage and fill up figures, not the trip computer which is not accurate. I seem to be getting better than most on here. I'm not a fast driver but not that slow either. I think the trick is to keep the revs down by changing up a bit earlier than I used to. Doesn't get you moving as quickly but certainly helps with consumption. And sitting at around 70mph in cruise for miles without touching the accelerator helps!

You will open pandora's box if you remap a new car under warranty.



1. Chevy, will say your warranty is invalidated, as the car no longer operates within designed tolerances.

2. You will need to inform your insurance company that you have modified the car from manufacturer specification.

My advice, don't do it..... Especially as it is still in warranty.

You will open pandora's box if you remap a new car under warranty.



1. Chevy, will say your warranty is invalidated, as the car no longer operates within designed tolerances.

2. You will need to inform your insurance company that you have modified the car from manufacturer specification.

Agreed 100%, makes complete sense.

In reality I would be very happy with an average of 32mpg!

<DIV =msg>Has anyone tried a fuel additive for diesel made by Millers? I tried it some time ago and it didn't make any significant difference to fuel consumption. However, recently, I found the nearly empty bottle and tipped it all in the tank to get rid of it - about double the normal dose. Car ran like a dream and returned 44 mpg on a trip to the New Forest and back. That is 6 - 8 mpg better than expected.
Haven't yet computed the cost of the Millers against the saving on diesel.............

I'm no mechanic, but I will say what Chevrolet said to me a while back when I was having an issue with the DPF not going off....




"DO NOT put additives in the diesel, as it alters the combustion temperature and will cause the break up of the DPF filter, which will cost £1000s of pounds to replace."



Now this is the same dealership that talked a lot of bo!!ox regarding why my DPF light would not go out, which was (I really believe) related toa wiring loom issues, as when that was fixed, my DPF worked perfectly and hasn't been on since (7k mile later and counting - fingers crossed).



Cant verify any of this.... But best check before putting fuel additives in, as I do know they can increase combustion temperatures, as that is how they work, burning off the crud.

There aren't many 4 x 4's out there withat the Captiva'skind of weight that produce great mpg figures as far as I can see.
However, my biggest gripe is with the mpg figures published in the new car brochure. They are so way out its untrue, and how do they justify them? I would say that when I bought my Captiva last November the salesman said you could take 5 mpg off each of the figures. In reality I would take off 7 for the urban, 11 for the combined and 15 for the extra urban. He did guarantee that I would definitely get more mpg than with my 1.8 petrol Zafira that I was part exchanging. He was wrong! Just as well I got a good deal on the car.
As for trying methods of increasing fuel efficiency like fuel additives and remapping, I just wouldn't bother for the difference it will make. With the remapping you might get 10 to 20 percent more mpg but you end up with a car with inconsistent performance, and power issues at times when you don't expect it. Not to mention the warranty issues!
