Hello guys!

I know it has been discussed many times already and yes, i have used the search button. Unfortunately, i was not able to find any posts with my issue. I have used the correct USB drive as it was suggested here, i have downloaded only AVI movies and MP3 files. My car sees them, but still wont play them due to the attached error. Anybody can suggest how to deal with this?

There are more than two dozen different Topic captions for this topic and it is known to be a problematic issue with the Captiva.

This has always been a disappointing aspect of this vehicle. It may be due to one or more reasons. Brand of USB, Formating of the USB, Size of USB used, the Codex, whether the Unit requires System upgrade etc.
The nearest improvement was discussed in this link :- USB movies question

You appear to have a Series 2 Captiva. You do not state the Year / variant. Nor have you completed your World Location in your sign-Up. These are both helpful and courteous facts to state for Forum members to identify.

Thank you for your reply.

As mentioned, i have ready all the topics with this subject including the one you referenced. I have formatted my drive to FAT32 as it was suggested there. I have used only mp3 and avi files. The car sees the files, but cannot play them. I also dont know where to upgrade the software in Bulgaria. Can i download it from somewhere? On this forum i ve read that it can be only done in a car dealership for example in UK for tons of money.

I have logged with facebook, hence i dont have the car info. Moreover i am not sure about the exact names. It is a 2011 2.2 diesel.

Your post is now echoing the difficulties which new member Rafi is raising although his vehicle is a Series 1 where as yours is a Series 2.
Here in UK we no longer have Chevrolet Dealerships (other than for two specialist vehicles). GM Chevrolet withdrew from UK in 2015 so to my knowledge no upgrade facilities exist now. Additionally the company called 'Here', who were contracted to provide the Sat Nav data had the contract cancelled by GM in 2015, so road data will be out of date even if the MP3 and Avi difficulties were overcome.

I think it is for these reasons that so many Members have simply changed the entire unit with something else but that is not straight forward either as the many many posts reveal. But that is a lot more posts under different Topic captions for reading another day.

Incorrect. I have already read everything about it before buying the thing last week. I knew that the navigation will suck and i will have to replace it, but i didnt know i wont be able to simply listen to music before spending $600 on a Tesla screen. Thats a big disappointment.

The installation of these androids is pretty straight forward actually.

Thanks anyways.

It would seem that if you have 'read everything' and androids are 'straight forward' to fit then I'm unsure what further help this Forum can provide.
Maybe the solution is to find an automotive specialist in your country who can resolve the Codec issue.

Hi Sash,

I'm no Captiva expert but have been experimenting with USB media, music and video files in recent months. But not extensively.

I have not been able to get anything larger than 32GB working - but that's via the SD card slot. To be honest I have not bothered with the USB port (except my previous vehicle's 32GB USB stick did work). For MP3 files the manual suggests to keep conversions to a maximum of 192Kbps. All my music is this or lower. I did re-compile a CD to 320Kbps files and it was okay. I won't share who the artist was ;)

I think the error message you have is more when playing AVI files? I have tried old AVI files from years ago and only a few work - or present the same error as you have. I've had no success converting DVD or Blu-ray films to AVI yet and just get the same error. There must be a specific standard it is looking for. For me I have never researched because this is not a feature I want or need (was just curious).

Hi, thank you for your answer. It is much more helpful then just "use the search button". I will try converting the mp3 to a lower size. I dont know what size was the one i used. Maybe it was too big. Unfortunately, i get the same error when playing both, avi and mp3. I havent tried the SD slot yet. It is gigantic. I have one laying around from an old camera i have. It might fit, just need to find it.

Hi Sash,

If it helps, both the SD cards and regular USB sticks have all been 32GB capacity and formatted FAT32 (so not NTFS or exFAT). Not that it should matter but the SDs are the Micro type plugged into an adapter.

MP3 wise, my files are always 192kbps (not Kbps as I said before). Frequency is 44,100 Hz. The codec is MPEG-1 (MPEG 1 Layer III). And I'm a fan of Mp3tag when tidying up the album and track details :) If you crack the AVI files let me know. Likewise I'll do the same if I ever try again.

After we purchased our Captivas - both my wife and I have one - I quickly adopted the SD card slot for media. It was empty and meant the USB socket inside the cubby-hole could be dedicated to dashcams (power).

Best,

Jonty.

Hi Jonty,

You are exactly correct. My friend has a car year 2010 and has the same SD slot for media on his screen (the car is some sort of an audi). So we tried his on my car and it works. I guess the USB is only for charging your phone. I have found my SD card from that camera i have had for 15 years. Now i only need to figure out how to connect it to my pc :D

Btw the sound in these captivas are awful. Is it the speakers, or the player? If it is only the speakers i could replace them..

Hi Sash,

When Chevrolet put the Series 2 together I'm led to believe they put some time and effort into the audio system. My wife and I have one each and the sound quality is fantastic for a 'standard' kit. It's a personal thing of course - sound - but I 'tuned' ours even more by upping the bass and treble a few notches.

Yours shouldn't be 'awful'. Perhaps check all the levels in case they've been set lower than 'normal' or something.

Hi Jonty,

Maybe that is it. Can you perhaps share where i could find those settings? I was not able to find any bass / tremble anywhere.

Hi Sash,

Press and hold the Menu Sound button for a couple of seconds and release - you'll see the stereo's display panel show options for Bass, Mid, Treb etc. Pressing Menu Sound will cycle through the options or you can press the corresponding button below each one. Use the rotary control (normally for volume) to +/- the option you're on. The display will revert back to normal after a short time of nothing happening. Once you're done, just leave it.

I was able to perfect my audio requirements just by upping the bass and treble and FADing to the rear a couple of notches.

Jonty, A helpful post.
I believe this information is in the Owners Handbook so Sash could have looked there.
Sash, In case you dont have an Owners Handbook you can download a copy from the link here:-
Just make sure that you select the correct 'year' .

Thank you Jonty, I tweaked the settings and it sounds pretty nice now.

Hi Sash,

Glad you got the audio levels sorted. Did you get any further with your SD cards and/or MP3 files? If I remember correctly you had some playback problems?

Tomorrow, I'll be taking some time out to look at my own radio unit. A couple of days ago I noticed the radio display was blank and I cannot get anything to display. The infotainment screen is fine - and the radio and its features (and audio) is working - just the blue screen on the radio unit is dead. I'm hoping a fuse somewhere......

Hey Jonty,

I am using the SD card with no issues. The USB slot only works for charging for me I guess. I havent even tried movie files yet. Im playing only mp3 on the SD. Perhaps my software needs updating. I am sorry for your troubles. I hope there is a separate fuse for the display and another one for the radio.. but it seems it is one whole unit. Why dont you try to completely reboot the thing? Remove the + from the battery and see what happens. In the meantime here is a photo from my last Captiva vacation :)

Hey Sash,

Thanks for sharing. The cars do look lovely - and quite the part when towing. Captiva vacation? Perhaps a new word blend... Captivacation ;)

For me, I'll start with the simple things. In life, car batteries do not like me - they are my nemesis. So, I leave them until last. But you are correct and that part is on my radar. If I'm lucky perhaps my wife can work on my terminals (that is not a euphemism by the way!)

Take care!
