Rear parking sensor continuous beep

My recently acquired Captiva had a parking sensor problem - so I replaced all 4

Now the 'P' amber light on the dash has gone, but slotting the gear in reverse I get one beep, followed by a continuous beep (at full volume!).

Has anyone had similar problems and what is the solution to this? Before anyone suggests, yes I have gone through most rear parking sensor threads for Captiva on this forum, but no one seems to come back and say, they did X, Y & Z and diagnosed the problem

Its driving me mad, I fear reversing!

Disconnect all sensors, make sure that connectors are clean and sound (no bent pin). Spray with WD40 and reconnect.

Autocrazy: Your World location is missing from your sign up. As a World Wide Forum it is helpful to know this due to different 'build' variations. Also vitally important to know which year/model variant etc you have so as to obtain specific applicable answer.

There was a post about three years ago that gave just about every explanation for every beep tone. The answer may be there.

You can add Location by going to Tools>Quicklinks>Edit Your Details. scroll and complete location.

Your vehicle info can be added so as to display automatically under your posts (example of mine below)
Go to Tools>Quicklinks>Edit Signature (Footer). They may be an exception to this apparently that some mobile devices crop this info off for some reason.

Hi AussieEd - Thanks for your reply - will have to ask my mechanic to remove the bumper and refit with as you mention clean and inspect the pints - he mentioned the wiring on one of them was cut, so he taped it, could that be the cause?

I tried several other posts, where people have posted the same problem as mine, but never replied back as resolved!

I have updated location and now have my vehicle in signaturesmile_big:

Unfortunately I only have the fuse layout for the Series 2 model so I cant immediately advise which fuse applies to the Series 1. Maybe one of our very knowledgeable Series 1 owners can come to the rescue on the fuse location. It is very possible that the 'cut wire' could be the cause even though it has been taped up.

Well done for updates on data.

Hi

I replaced all 4 sensors as it was not that expensive and the bumper was going to be taken off by my mechanic anyway. Before I had 6 beeps (so potentially only one sensor gone) and a parking error light on the instrument cluster

After replacement of all 4 sensors, the parking error light on the instrument cluster has disappeared. Now when slotted in to reverse it gives one very quick beep followed by a continuous tone (loud!)

I am thinking of getting the bumper off, cleaning all contacts and do a trial and error using combination of new and old sensors until I can eliminate the reverse beep. If all that does not work, it could be something else

I have seen some posts mention about short beep followed by continuous beep, asking for advice, but no one has reported back as to what they did to resolve their issue!

No, it is not possible to change a sensor without taking the bumper off, see https://www.chevroletownersclub.co.uk/forum/17-captiva/517-parking-sensors-3.html

From the same thread, here are detailed instructions:

6th May 2018, 11:50
Softycrofty Join Date: May 2018 Location: Sheffield

To test: Turn on ignition lights and pull hand brake up and down 3 times within 10 seconds.

1 slow repeated beep (6 times) is no.1 (passenger side)

2 quick repeated beeps is second along.

3 quick repeated beeps is third along.

4 quick repeated beeps is fourth along (drivers side).

That's how it works on my English right hand drive 58 plate Captiva LTX

To change a sensor you have to remove the bumper. Quite easy to do.

Unscrew the 4 screws in each wheel arch with a 7mm socket. One is underneath and one is in a recess at the top.

Remove the 4 large black screw clips along under the bumper.

Unscrew the rear light clusters and remove the other plastic screw clips. One in each.

Temporarily put the lights back.

Remove the 6 little screws around the opened boot hatch.

Carefully pull the bumper from the wheel arches to remove it from its clips.

Lay the bumper onto something to protect it.

To remove the faulty sensor, unclip the wire and turn the plastic locking nut by turning it 90 degrees anticlockwise. Take note of the positions and the arrows on the locking ring, makes it easier to put back.

Take care putting it back to get the plastic on the top side under the lighting clusters and the right side of the wheel arch.

Victor. Just asking. Have change the sensors and the light is gone on the dashboard. But not tone or beep. Did the check that you describe above. No beep, no tone, nothing. Is there a relay for this? That give the tone,or beep? Or is that a fuse for that?

Is there a relay for this?
There is a control module mounted in the drivers side (RHD) boot area behind the furnishing panel, they refer to it in that link I gave in my response to A-Man.

Or is that a fuse for that?
Don't know about the fuse layout for the Captiva, check your owners handbook. I wouldn't be surprised if it works through the Body Control Module so check the interior fuse panel. Also, it may not be labelled for Reverse Sensors, it may be identified as BCM Aux or something like that.

Have you checked the buzzer? I believe its' mounted behind the dash, not sure where. Some of the Captiva owners might have a listen to theirs on a system that's working and tell you where the buzzer noise emanates from .
